My daughter struggles with negative self talk regularly. It is disheartening to hear. She often discusses herself not being good at things and says things like “nobody likes me” “people are afraid of me” and more. What has worked best so far for us is sitting down and discussing why she feels that way and asking for specific examples of what has made her feel that way. Then we sit back and dissect that example and discuss what was happening at that time and how to use the example as a learning experience and often times as a parent I have to show her a different perspective on the example she gives. We end the discussion with positive thinking and she will have to come up with at least 3 nice empowering things to say about herself. If it is a rough one and a little more serious or hard to get through to her she will write the positive things down and throughout the rest of the day she has to point out those positive things within herself. Example being “I am kind” when she does something nice for somebody without expecting anything in return she will say “see mommy I AM kind!” She is 8 years old and often deals with bullying which she believes is because of her image. We do a lot of redirecting and positive thinking. These are all things she struggles with daily. With the help of an online support group I’ve gained great tips in helping her through moments like these. I look forward to gaining even more knowledge and coping methods for negative self talk through the live video provided by you! Thank you! I am so glad I found this website.
