About Online Counseling or Coaching:

Online counseling or coaching is a form of mental health counseling or life coaching that happens over electronic means. Video conferences for online counseling or coaching are conducted though Skype with a webcam.

Online counseling is available to adults (over 18 years of age) and to minors (under 18 years of age) when written parent/guardian consent is received. Despite parent consent being signed, information received through the therapeutic relationship with minors will be kept confidential in order to instill trust in the counseling or coaching process. This confidence will be upheld, even from parents/guardians unless:

  • The child gives his or her permission to release such information
  • The child expresses intent to harm themself or someone else
  • There is reasonable suspicion or evidence of abuse or neglect of a minor (under the age of 18), elder person (65 years or older), or a dependent adult
  • A subpoena or other court order is received mandating that information be disclosed

Confidentiality:

Confidentiality will be upheld for adults and minors regarding therapeutic communications, records, research, and collaboration with other professionals. Information may be released only when:

  • A client-signed, written release of information indicating you give your permission for Barb Roba, Ed.M, CAS, LMHC of behaviorcorner.com to speak with an identified source
  • The client expresses intent to harm themself or someone else
  • There is reasonable suspicion or evidence of abuse or neglect of a minor (under the age of 18), elder person (65 years or older), or a dependent adult
  • A subpoena or other court order is received mandating that information be disclosed

I, Barb Roba, Ed.M, CAS, LMHC of behaviorcorner.com, am a mandated reporter. Therefore, I am required to comply with New York State and federal statutes concerning mandated reporting of abuse or neglect.

In the fields of mental health counseling and life coaching, privacy and confidentiality must be ethically and strictly upheld. Online services are no exception. Counseling and coaching services received through behaviorcorner.com occur on a secure sever, communications are kept safe and confidential via password protection, and all services are HIPAA (USA) compliant.

Those seeking counseling or coaching services, must consider that communication through some email systems carry the possibility that some information may not be kept confidential due to the possibility of it being intercepted during transfer. In the event that this happens, an alternate means of communication will be implemented. An alternate means to conduct sessions will also be employed if the primary choice of session communication is not available.

In some situations it is beneficial to all parties in the therapeutic relationship for Barb Roba, Ed.M, CAS, LMHC of behaviorcorner.com, as the professional counselor or coach, to collaborate with other professional mental health counselors and life coaches. In the event that this occurs, no information that could identify the client will be disclosed.

Counseling vs. Coaching and Results Achieved:

Given that online counseling and coaching can extend into many different states and even into several countries, the venue of where counseling or coaching occurs can be confusing. I, Barb Roba, Ed.M, CAS, LMHC of behaviorcorner.com, am a New York State licensed mental health counselor. Clients residing within the state of New York may receive therapy through my licensure as a mental health counselor or choose to gain support through life coaching. Those clients who reside outside of the state of New York acknowledge that licensed counseling will not reach your home state. However my certification as a life coach extends beyond New York State for sought counseling/coaching services.

Desired results of the counseling or coaching relationship are not guaranteed. Each client is different and the element of change rests in the hands of the client. As a mental health counselor and a life coach, I will challenge you to better yourself and your situation. It is you, as the client, who will ultimately choose to implement plans and changes. You agree to not hold Barb Roba, Ed.M, CAS, LMHC of behaviorcorner.com liable for any information or insight achieved through counseling or coaches services.

Crisis Services:

Contact 911 in the event of an emergency or call Crisis Services and the National Hopeline Network at 1-800-784-2433.

Online counseling and coaching is not appropriate for crisis situations. Online counseling and coaching is not be used in place of medical treatment or of psychiatric care. New diagnoses will not be given to clients. If concern exists that an undiagnosed condition is present, appropriate referrals will be made.

It is also possible that the condition of the client or of the presenting situation may change to the point of needing crisis services or in-person help. In this event, alternate options for mental health care will be discussed between Barb Roba, Ed.M, CAS, LMHC of behaviorcorner.com and the client. Such communication will be documented.

Prior to the first session:

Contact information, demographic information, and emergency contacts must be provided. Information submitted to behaviorcorner.com is kept in confidentially in our records for as long as a service agreement or membership is in place. After a service agreement has ended, the record are permanently destroyed. Information submitted on behaviorcorner.com will never be released to any third parties except in compliance with the law and ethics. There will never be a time where your private information is shared.

Potential clients will be asked to fill out an intake form to determine if you and the presenting situation are a good fit for online counseling/coaching. If I, Barb Roba, Ed.M, CAS, LMHC of behaviorcorner.com, determine that the situation is beyond the scope of online service and/or my scope of treatment expertise of parenting and childhood behaviors, I will direct to you to seek other options. Examples include those who are in crisis, are threatening to hurt themselves or others, or situations in which the client has severe diagnoses such as personality disorders, bi-polar, history of substance abuse, violence, suicidal or homicidal tendencies, and others as determined by behaviorcorner.com.

These above-listed situations require the intervention of crisis services and of person-to-person therapy, and will be documented as such. Contact 911 in the event of an emergency or contact Crisis Services and the National Hopeline Network at 1-800-784-2433.

Emergency contact information must be provided prior to our first session. Communication with the identified contacts will occur only when the client is first informed of such a decision and only if I, Barb Roba, Ed.M, CAS, LMHC of behaviorcorner.com determine that the client or situation has risen to the level of a crisis where:

  • A client-signed, written release of information indicating you give you permission for behaviorcorner.com to speak with the identified source
  • The client expresses intent to harm themself or someone else
  • There is reasonable suspicion or evidence of abuse or neglect of a minor (under the age of 18), elder person (65 years or older), or a dependent adult
  • A subpoena or other court order is received mandating that information be disclosed


If you experience a crisis or emergency situation, contact Crisis Service and the National Hopeline Network at 1-800-784-2433 or call 911. Online counseling is not a recommended service for crisis situations.

Termination:

If either the client or I, Barb Roba, Ed.M, CAS, LMHC of behaviorcorner.com, feel that our therapeutic or coaching relationship is not effective, we will discuss termination along with other options that may be helpful. If you would like me to talk to any professionals that you choose to see after we terminate sessions, a release of information must be signed granting me such permission. Termination may occur at any time as requested by the client. Termination may be initiated by behaviorcorner.com when referrals have been made for a new counselor or coach to see the client.

Dual Relationships:

Dual relationships between the client and counselor/coach are strictly prohibited. The only relationship that will come of our interactions will be strictly professional. Furthermore, I will not accept friend requests on social media sites.

Miscellaneous:

If an appointment needs to be canceled, please contact me at least 24 hours in advance to cancel. If cancelation is not received 24 hours in advance the client will be charged for the session. Packages will include up to 2 make-up sessions given 24 hours notice of given cancelations.

Fees charged for specific counseling and coaching packages are listed on behaviorcorner.com/counselors-corner. Payment is due prior to our session beginning and may be paid by using a major credit or debit card, or PayPal.
