Music. It’s engaging, it’s soothing, it’s energizing, it’s mood altering AND it’s also a fantastic way to enhance relationships with children while teaching them skills! In this article, I’d like to share with you some of the songs that I use/teach to preschool teachers and parents. All tunes should be ones that you would be familiar with, but have altered lyrics. Some of these I have created on my own, some are from Gymboree classes I have attended with my own child, and some are from CSEFEL trainings I went to. All of these are great, engaging songs to tunes children will recognize! This makes them more likely to participate and play along while building on important social/emotional/cognitive skills while helping you with classroom management!
For Preschool/Daycare Teachers

Welcome, welcome everyone, (or “little one” if child is alone) Now you’re here lets have some fun. First we’ll clap our hands just so, Then we’ll bend and touch our toes. Welcome, welcome everyone, Now you’re here lets have some fun.
I Wish I Had a Little Red Box (Tune: “Polly Wolly Doodle”)
Oh, I wish I had a little red box to put my (child’s name) in. I’d take her out and Squeeze, Squeeze, Squeeze (or hug, hug, hug) And put her back again.
- You can change the color of the box based on the color shirt the child is wearing
- -use as a circle time song, welcome and introductions-bringing each child up on your lap or next to you in front of the group helps them feel special. Works on building knowledge of colors as well!
Sitting in My High Chair ( Tune: Short’nin’ Bread) (good for transition to lunch time or if needing to wait- you can substitute the color of the chair for older children rather than saying high chair)

If you’re mad and you know it take a breath (breathe in and out)

*Continue different versus with different coping skills such as “Ask for Help-please help”, “Ask for hug- hug please”, “Use your words-I’m mad”, “Take a break- go to your room”

Red means Stop
Green means Go
Yellow means go very slow……

*Kids feel so special when you personalize a song somehow for them!
